Residential Roof Replacement in Lepton, Huddersfield
A returning customer in Lepton contacted Alta Roofing about the deteriorating pitched roof on their semi-detached home. Age and continued exposure to the elements had left the tiles and underfelt in poor condition, with water ingress reaching their young children’s bedrooms. Following assessment, the project developed into a complete strip and re-cover designed to provide a watertight, well-ventilated and lower-maintenance roofing system.

An Ageing Roof That Was No Longer Keeping the Home Dry
The existing roof had deteriorated considerably through age and the property’s exposed location. Both the tiles and underfelt were in poor condition, and the problem had progressed beyond appearance alone.
Water ingress was reaching the bedrooms used by the customer’s young children. With several elements of the roofing system deteriorating, the project required more than replacing a few damaged tiles.
A complete strip and re-cover gave us the opportunity to remove the ageing materials, inspect the roof as work progressed and rebuild it using a modern roofing system designed to improve weather protection, ventilation and the overall finish of the property.
Stripping and Re-Covering the Pitched Roof
The existing roof coverings were stripped before the new roofing system was installed. The replacement roof used flat anthracite interlocking concrete tiles, selected to provide a clean finish that suited the property.
Underneath the tiles, we installed upgraded tanalised treated battens and a semi-breathable roofing membrane.
Ventilation formed an important part of the new roof. Vented eaves protection was installed alongside a vented ridge and hip system, supporting airflow through the roof construction while creating a neat, maintenance-free finish at the ridge and hips.
The combination gave the homeowner a roof that did more than improve the appearance of the property. The work addressed the performance of the complete roofing system.
Renewing the Flat-Roof Dormer and Roofline
Rather than replacing the main pitched roof while leaving ageing adjoining elements untouched, the project also included a complete renewal of the flat-roof dormer.
The dormer received a new 18mm deck, insulation and EPDM membrane, providing a new waterproof covering alongside the replacement pitched roof.
The property’s old timber roofline was also removed and replaced with upgraded PVC roofline products. This provided a cleaner finish while removing the ongoing maintenance requirements associated with the old external timber.
The combination of pitched and flat roofing work allowed the different sections of the property to be addressed within the same project.
Dealing With an Unexpected Chimney Problem
One of the most important parts of the project only became clear once work was underway.
We discovered that the chimney was severely deteriorated following years of weather exposure. Leaving it in its existing condition could have created another problem above the newly completed roof.
We discussed the findings with the homeowner before deciding how to proceed. The customer had plans to convert the loft in the future, so we mutually agreed that lowering the chimney below roof height and covering the area was the most appropriate solution for their plans.
This meant the deteriorated external chimney was dealt with during the roof replacement rather than being left as a potential future issue.
A Watertight New Roof Completed in Around 10 Days
The residential roof replacement took approximately 10 days from start to finish.
Once complete, the property had a new pitched roof, renewed flat-roof dormer, upgraded ventilation and a replacement PVC roofline. The anthracite tiles also gave the home a noticeably cleaner and more modern appearance.
More importantly, the work eradicated the water ingress that had been affecting the children’s bedrooms.
The customer was very satisfied with the completed project and had the reassurance of knowing that the deterioration affecting the main roof had been comprehensively addressed.
From a Previous Garage Roof to a Complete House Roof Replacement
An important part of this project was the relationship we already had with the homeowner.
Around six months before replacing the main roof, Alta Roofing had completed work on the customer’s garage roof. When the house roof needed more extensive attention, they chose to return to us for the next project.
That repeat custom meant a great deal to us, as the homeowner already knew how we worked before asking us to undertake the larger roof replacement.
It also gave us an understanding of the property and allowed us to discuss decisions such as the deteriorated chimney in the context of the customer’s future plans.
